How mounds are made matters: seismic line restoration techniques affect peat physical and chemical properties throughout the peat profile

چکیده

Seismic lines are prominent linear disturbances across boreal Canada with large-scale consequences to wildlife and ecosystem function. Although seismic line restoration has been observed improve tree growth survival, application in peatlands shown alter functions such as hydrology carbon storage. The most common active method is called mechanical mounding, where the classic technique inverts peat profile. New mounding methods that maintain profile may provide benefits by preserving existing vegetation reducing disturbance. To determine effects of different on soil quality, we collected analyzed cores from two sites for various properties (C/N ratios, δ 13 C, 15 N, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy humification indices). Vegetation surveys were also conducted. both a collection crossing poor fens Alberta. One site was treated method, while other new methods. Classic significantly increased degree decomposition, indicative lower substrate quality. Mechanical greatly reduced moss cover introduced large amounts bare ground cover. newer did not result these changes largely comparable natural communities. Preserving support faster return

Reducing the carbon footprint of Canadian peat extraction and restoration.

The Canadian horticultural peat industry generates carbon emissions through various methods of peat extraction, processing, and land-use changes. This study provides a carbon emissions analysis comparing the traditional vacuum harvest (VH) and block-cut (BC) extraction techniques to a new acrotelm transplant (AT) method that restores natural peatland function by preserving and replacing the sur...

Leaf size indices and structure of the peat swamp forest

Leaf size indices of the tree species in the peatland of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao in Philippines was examined to deduce the variation of forest structure and observed forest zonation.  Using raunkiaer and webb’s leaf size classification, the leaf morphometrics of seven tree species consistently found on the established sampling plots were determined.  The species includes Ternstroemia phi...

Potential of OM of Iranian peat and swamp and characterization of physico-chemical properties of organic soils

The objective of this work was to investigate the potential of three different kinds of Iranian peat and swamp soils as sources of organic matter (OM) in the Golestan Province, Northern Iran. Comparison of the peats was done in terms of the degree of humification on the von Post scale. Moreover, the X-ray fluorescence, X-Ray Diffractometry, and Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) techniques wer...

Influence of Substitution of Peat with Iranian Zeolite(Clinoptilolite) In Peat Medium on Ficus Benjamina Growth

This experiment was designed to characterize the effects of size and concentration of an Iranian clinoptilolite zeolite on the growth ofFicus benjamina (starlight) in peat base media. Ficus benjamina was stock rooted and grown in a peat consisting perlite (2: 1 v/v) (P: Pe), zeolite (10, 20, 30 and 40 v/v %, two sizes 0.5-3 mm and 3-8 mm) instead of peat in P: Pe (2: 1 v/v) media. Ficus benjami...
